Serving gyros since 1986, Del City's Akropolis Matin's Greek Restaurant is tucked into a strip shopping center at 4734 SE 29th St. The friendly staff cheerily greets the clientele as they enter the establishment, which has a distinctly European flavor. From walls with portraits of Greece to an English football flag, the eatery's European authenticity feels complete.

Among the daily specials and regular menu, I decided to go all out and order the chicken plate. It serves portions of all the other available combinations for $7.49. The daily special is a gyro with fries and a drink for $4.99, but I was particularly interested in getting a taste of the salad as well. With large portions, the meal was a delicious treat. I did not polish off the entire meal, but did enjoy tastes of it all.

CHICKEN TENDERS
The chicken was shredded and seasoned with peppery spices. Dunked into the creamy, smooth Tzatziki sauce, the chicken was delicious. I am sure the chicken on a pita selection would be terrific, too. The salad was a delight. The dressing was an oil and vinegar-based blend, and there was no overpowering ingredient. The result was a very light enhancement to the lettuce, feta cheese, tomatoes, black olives and onions. The Greek salad with chicken would be my choice on a subsequent visit, for sure.

I sampled a fry, which was cooked just perfectly: not too mushy, not too crispy and seasoned with what appeared to be some extremely mild red pepper or variation of paprika.

The pita bread was very fresh and a perfect complement to both the meat and the salad. There was no leftover salad dressing or Tzatziki sauce, thanks to the very fresh pita bread.

The menu also features less traditionally Greek items, including hamburgers, a Philly sandwich and a rather wide kids selection. I did not sample the baklava, but the mere mention of it on the menu was enticing.

The restaurant is open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and closes at 4 p.m. Saturday. It is very carryout and call-ahead friendly, as I watched customers of both types while I waited for my feast. The phone number for the eatery is 670-3040.
