Matching the outside temperature, eatery serves hot, spicy chili

Eating hot chili when the temperature outside is in the triple digits may seem to make a steamy situation worse, but with air conditioning blasting through the vents at Ron's Hamburgers & Chili, 351 N. Air Depot Blvd. in Midwest City, I soon forgot about the outside heat and enjoyed the dish.

Meeting friends who work in the Midwest City area for lunch recently, we ordered various items the eatery offers. With an appetizer and side-item menu full of deep-fried offerings, our table was soon filled with fresh-cut French fries, battered and deep-fried onion rings, and fried pickles to start the meal. I sampled a few fries, which were golden-fried on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

I did not sample the other items in the red baskets, but the smile on Lisa's face as she bit into her fried pickle was unmistakably genuine. There was also some discussion about how tasty the Spanish okra is, which are battered and deep-fried, with jalapeno peppers and onions. I will take their word for it.

TWO-FER
Because the eatery's name includes both hamburgers and chili, I opted for smaller portions of both for my lunch. I ordered a fifth-lb. cheeseburger ($3.25) with mustard, lettuce and pickles, and a small chili with beans and cheese ($3), along with a large ice water in the event the chili was too spicy. The cheeseburger was tasty, as the patty was flavorful. The cheese melted nicely over the beef. The bun was adequately portioned for the smaller burger.

Matt ordered the double burger, and the bun was adequately sized for the larger portion of meat as well. Who wants a lot of beef and no bread, or vice versa? Ron's balanced out both nicely. The shredded lettuce was very fresh, always a bonus for burgers.

The chili was the highlight for me. Even though the chili I make is very heavy on the tomato flavor, I appreciate other preparations. The chili at Ron's has a terrific taste to it, leaning more on the flavor of the beef and spices ,rather than relying on tomatoes to season (and sometimes swallow) the dish. It was not at all soupy and was very hearty with the beans. A tiny bit of shredded cheese topped the cup, which was not overpowering. I am sure when winter weather visits Oklahoma, a larger portion of the chili would hit the spot, or the chili cheeseburger or chili fries any day of the year.

The group opted to skip dessert after the fried delicacies graced our table, but I am sure the pies and pralines would be a great chaser for the spicy chili and hearty burgers.

Established in 1975, Ron's Hamburgers & Chili is open 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
