After all, we received numerous compliments about our publication and its new appearance, content and local ownership. In this business, compliments can be few and far between, so we enjoyed all of the positive remarks.

Del City preps for Armed Forces parade

Annual event will take place May 14; entries are still being accepted

By Tim Farley

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and finish around noon. The route starts north of Interstate 40 and Sunnylane Road and will proceed toward Southeast 29th Street and then head east on Southeast 29th before disbanding at Linda Lane.

Del City’s Armed Forces parade is considered one of the largest ongoing parades in Oklahoma.

Last year’s parade featured more than 150 entries, and despite threatening weather was viewed by more than 20,000 people, according to unofficial estimates.

Several individuals and organizations have already registered to enter this year’s parade, including Del City Mayor Brian Linley, state Rep. Scott Inman, Oklahoma County Commissioner Willa Johnson, various military units, Col. Robert D. LaBrutta, 552nd Air Control Wing Commander Col. John Rauch and Command Chief Scott Magoon.

Others committing to the parade are Del City Chamber of Commerce President-elect Connie Myrick, chamber Executive Director Kay Bibens, Mid-Del Teacher of the Year Mary Styers, several hundred India Shriners with their funny cars and bikes, and various color guards from the Mid-Del area.

Groups and individuals can still enter the parade. They should contact Monica Kynaston at City Hall, 3701 S.E. 15th St. or call 670-7379. Kynaston also may be reached at mkynaston@cityofdelcity.com.

Applications and additional information is available at www. cityofdelcity.com and also may be picked up at the city hall lobby.

ANNUAL MEAL

Before the parade, the Kiwanis will host its annual pancake event. Midwest City Elks Lodge No. 1890 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will serve breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon.

The all-you-can-eat breakfast will feature pancakes, sausage, orange juice, milk and coffee.

The cost of the breakfast is $5 per person for ages 13 and up. Children 12 and under eat free.

Proceeds from Pancake Day benefit Lodge programs, including the various programs of the youth activities committee: Americanism essay contest, drug awareness programs in local elementary schools, Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot and the Scholarship Program; the veterans affairs program; the Christmas basket program and other community-oriented events.

For additional information or to obtain advance tickets, call Dick Kanenchen at 672-3650 or Don Bisbee at 818-1473.
