The Monroney 8th-grade football team is undefeated. The Thunderbirds are not only a sparkling 7-0 this season, but the Midwest City contingent over the past three seasons is a perfect 22-0. The last time a Monroney team zipped through middle school with an untarnished record, the players ripened in high school for Midwest City and won consecutive state championships in 1994 and '95.
The salty Monroney football squad is not just known in Oklahoma, but former NFL star Deion Sanders caught wind of the T-Birds' success and has set up a game at 2:35 p.m. Saturday at Rose Field.
Sanders, who runs the PrimeTime youth football program, will bring his 8th-grade team, The Truth, to Midwest City. The Truth is also currently 7-0. Sanders himself is coming, as he is the head coach. Emmitt Smith is possibly attending as well.
The PrimeTime football program is run out of the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, with more than 2,600 kids trying out for the teams. Sanders then selects the top 150 players for his various squads.
Little League events will begin at 10 a.m. at Rose Field Saturday with the big undefeated clash kicking off at 2:35 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults and $1 for kids 12 and under.
Monroney is a three-time Metro Conference champion, and averages 45 points per game. This season the T-Birds dropped rival Carl Albert 50-14 and downed a previously 19-0 Putnam West squad 42-20. Carl Albert finished 6-2, and West wound up 7-1.
