Anyone who hasn't driven by Midwest Regional Medical Center in the past months might be surprised to find the hospital tower is taller than it used to be.
As part of an ongoing expansion project MRMC, 2825 Parklawn Dr., is gaining two floors to bring its Mulinix Tower to eight stories. That addition will add 102 beds to bring the total hospital bed count to 357. The $25-million project began in May 2009 and is set for completion by mid-July. It will add about 47,000 square feet to the tower.
The Mulinix Tower was named after the hospital's Chief Executive Officer, William D. Mulinix, who served as the hospital's chief administrator from 1962 to 1990.
Hospital CEO Page Vaughan said the project is on schedule for completion in July and wall installation in the new floors is 50 percent complete. Those floors will provide private and semi-private beds for medical and surgical patients.
Outside of the brick and mortar additions, 2009 was also a year for growth at the hospital. Last year, 19 new physicians joined MRMC. In 2010, the hospital is on track to add at least as many physicians as in 2009 to expand the hospital's focus areas including family medicine, internal medicine, cardiovascular surgery, cardiology, urology, orthopedics and ear, nose and throat. In 2008 the hospital added 15 new physicians.
"As eastern Oklahoma County continues to grow, we plan to meet the healthcare needs of our community," Vaughn said.
Midwest City Memorial Hospital began in 1962 as a 70-bed community hospital. In 1986, a four-story tower was added and in 1988 the name was changed to Midwest City Regional Hospital. The tower received two additional floors in 1993, which brought the bed count to 206, according to the hospital's Web site.
PLEASING EXPANSION J. Guy Henson, city manager of Midwest City, is pleased with the hospital's expansion plans and timetable for completion of the new addition.
"We've walked through on several occasions and they really seem to be getting after it and doing a good quality job," Henson said.
Henson said a thriving and ever-growing hospital goes hand-in-hand with having a great community.
"You can see other cities and other communities that don't have hospitals wanting to figure out a way to get a hospital in their city," he said. "We are blessed that our forefathers had the vision to establish the hospital."
The architect for the latest expansion is JHBR Architecture and M.J. Harris is the general contractor.
In the 1990s and into the 2000s Midwest Regional Medical Center added additional healthcare services including an expanded emergency room, robotic surgical systems, heart health, breast health and birthing services as well as a Level III Trauma Center.
"By expanding our facility in terms of beds and medical staff, we are investing in the overall success of our community," Vaughan said. "Our daily focus is on how to best serve our patients who live in the Mid-Del area and surrounding communities."
