For those who enjoyed the Mexican food at the old Monterey Jack's restaurants, and have missed the signature fare since the last one closed in 2008, Jack is back, this time in Del City.
Jack Young founded the restaurant bearing his moniker, Monterey Jack's, in 1993. The chain grew to include locations around the Oklahoma City metro area, Lawton, and one in Texas. Young sold the chain in 2000. After a decade out of the game, he decided to again try his hand at opening a Mexican restaurant. For his new venture, Chile Mercado, he chose a former breakfast restaurant in Del City. When Young first stepped into the former Madison's Kitchen, 4640 S.E. 15th St., he knew he had his work cut out for him.
In addition to the rundown and outdated building, the spot did not exactly sit on a restaurant row. Undeterred, Young and his crew set to work to bring the building up to date, and redo the interior. There were plenty of hurdles along the way. The kitchen had to be completely redone and electrical issues delayed the opening planned for midsummer. When Young did a soft opening in October, there were even more surprises.
"It was terrible," Young said. "We had electrical problems, we had equipment breakdowns and we had computer problems."
After opening for several half days, he was able to get the house in order and finally began welcoming customers. Since then, the restaurant is running smoothly and often full at peak lunch and dinner times.
CRAVINGS RAVINGS On a recent afternoon, Jimmie Nolen was dining there for the third time. She raved about the fish tacos, chile relleno, and especially the tortilla soup.
"It is so flavorful," Nolen said. "I have been very pleased and impressed with the food."
Helping run the restaurant are Leticia Hernandez, Alfonso Fonseca and Young's son, Matthew. Both Hernandez and Fonseca have years of experience in restaurants. Fonseca got his start at Monterey Jack's and most recently was with the Grateful Bean in Oklahoma City before it closed this summer.
For Young, he has found a new home for his signature Mexican dishes in Del City, and already has regulars who stop in to try old favorites, and sample his new fare. If things continue to go well, he said an expansion to other stores could be in the future. But for now, he's just working to please his new customers and win over others who loved Monterey Jack's, or those who are trying his food for the first time.
"I'm really happy with Del City," Young said. "I couldn't be happier with the reception we've received."
