After all, we received numerous compliments about our publication and its new appearance, content and local ownership. In this business, compliments can be few and far between, so we enjoyed all of the positive remarks.

Longtime MWC fire department spokesman Jerry Lojka retires

Lojka spent 29 years at the Midwest City Fire Department and served in several roles, including firefighter, inspector, investigator, public education officer, public information officer and fire marshal.

His favorite job was that of department spokesman as he answered questions from the press, and conveyed important fire prevention tips to the public.

Del City chamber to honor Gene Piper

Piper and his wife, Jackie, moved to Del City as a young couple and began a friendship with contractor Pat Henderson. In 1954, the Piper and his wife moved backs to Tonkawa as manager of the C.R. Anthony Store. He later returned to Del City and became the manager of the Anthony’s store in the Del Crest Shopping Center. Piper was the youngest manager Ray Anthony ever hired in the history of the company.

Uncertainty surrounds cuts, base closings

Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, recently said he didn’t think Congress would go along with the president’s expected request for more base closures. Conflict of interest issue raised in Ward 6 race

City council incumbent Turner Mann believes Jeff Moore - one of his three opponents in the Ward 6 race – would have a “conflict of interest” if he was elected.

Moore, 49, is a homebuilder and has worked extensively in the Midwest City area on various developments, which routinely are brought before the council for its approval.

Del City council votes to renew Edwards’ contract as manager

Del City’s council rehired City Manager Mark Edwards for another year during the Jan. 3 meeting.

The council voted 5-0 to retain Edwards at his current salary and benefits package, which totals $100,000.
